Compensation for a delayed or cancelled Eurowings flight

If your Eurowings flight is delayed or cancelled, or you are denied boarding, you can claim compensation of €250 to €600 per person under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Eurowings is an EU airline, so the Regulation, as a rule, covers its flights from and to Bulgaria, including the seasonal flights from Varna and Burgas to Germany and Austria. The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance, not on the ticket price.

In short:

  • Compensation for a delayed or cancelled Eurowings flight is €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, depending on the distance to your final destination.
  • You are entitled to compensation if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late.
  • If you miss a connection on a single booking, compensation is calculated based on your final destination.
  • Eurowings does not owe compensation if it proves that an extraordinary circumstance caused the delay or cancellation of that particular flight and that it could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
  • A voucher does not replace compensation - you only have to accept it if you agree.

Compensation for a delayed Eurowings flight

Passengers can claim compensation of €250 to €600 for a delayed Eurowings flight if they reach their final destination 3 hours or more late. The arrival delay is counted until at least one of the aircraft doors is opened and passengers can leave the aircraft, not until the moment of landing.

What are your rights when your Eurowings flight is delayed?

When What you can ask for
Expected departure delay of 2, 3 or 4 hours, depending on the distance and route Care - meals, refreshments and, if necessary, a hotel, whatever the reason for the delay
Arrival at your final destination 3 hours or more late Compensation of €250, €400 or €600, unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances and that it took all reasonable measures
Departure delay of 5 hours or more The option not to travel and a refund of the ticket price

In extraordinary circumstances - for example, severe weather, air traffic restrictions or certain airport problems - Eurowings may be released from paying compensation if it proves that this particular circumstance caused the delay of that particular flight and that the delay could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Ordinary technical faults and problems within the airline's own organisation - for example, a crew member suddenly falling ill - are, as a rule, not extraordinary circumstances.

A strike by the airline's own staff - pilots or cabin crew - is, as a rule, not an extraordinary circumstance when it concerns the employees' demands on the airline. Strikes by staff outside the airline - for example, airport security or air traffic control - may be an extraordinary circumstance, but even then Eurowings owes you care at the airport.

Eurowings flights from Bulgaria

Eurowings flies from Bulgaria mainly in the summer season - from Varna and Burgas to airports in Germany and Austria. Most of these routes are over 1,500 km, so if your flight is delayed or cancelled, the compensation is, as a rule, €400.

Route Distance Compensation
Burgas - Salzburg 1,274 km €250
Varna - Stuttgart 1,556 km €400
Burgas - Stuttgart 1,572 km €400
Varna - Hamburg 1,743 km €400
Varna - Cologne 1,774 km €400
Burgas - Hamburg 1,782 km €400
Burgas - Cologne 1,798 km €400
Varna - Düsseldorf 1,815 km €400
Burgas - Düsseldorf 1,840 km €400

The routes are seasonal, based on the summer 2026 schedules. Distances are calculated using the great circle method, as required by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. The amount shown is the possible compensation - your entitlement depends on the other conditions of the Regulation, and in certain cases the compensation may be reduced.

Missed a connecting flight with Eurowings?

Eurowings also sells connecting flights on a single booking. In that case, the flights are treated as one journey, and you are entitled to compensation if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late - even if the first flight was only a few minutes late but made you miss the next one. Compensation is based on the distance between your departure airport and your final destination.

If you bought the two flights separately - even if both are with Eurowings - they are, as a rule, treated as separate journeys. In that case, you can only claim compensation for the delayed flight if it reached its own destination 3 hours or more late.

Who owes compensation if the flight is operated by another airline?

Flights with a Eurowings (EW) flight number may be operated by Eurowings GmbH (Germany), by Eurowings Europe (Malta) or by a partner airline under a codeshare agreement. Some flights are also operated with another airline's aircraft and crew under a wet lease agreement. Under such an agreement, liability for compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, as a rule, remains with Eurowings, which organises the flight and bears operational responsibility for it.

Eurowings and Discover Airlines are different airlines. Discover Airlines (formerly Eurowings Discover) is a separate airline in the Lufthansa Group and operates its own flights, including from Varna and Burgas to Frankfurt. If your flight is with Discover Airlines, compensation is owed by Discover Airlines, not by Eurowings.

Your booking shows which airline operates each flight ("operated by").

Compensation for a cancelled Eurowings flight

If Eurowings cancels a flight and passengers are told less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, they can claim compensation of €250 to €600, unless the airline proves that an extraordinary circumstance caused the cancellation of that particular flight and that the cancellation could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken, or it offered re-routing that meets the conditions of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Besides financial compensation, the Regulation also gives you the right to choose between a refund of the ticket price and re-routing to your final destination, as well as the right to care - meals, refreshments and, if needed, accommodation. Care is owed even when the cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances.

How much compensation does Eurowings have to pay?

Under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, the amount of compensation depends on the flight distance:

Distance Compensation
Flights of up to 1,500 km €250 per passenger
Flights within the EU of more than 1,500 km and other flights of more than 1,500 km and up to 3,500 km €400 per passenger
Flights of more than 3,500 km that are not entirely within the EU €600 per passenger

If you are re-routed, the airline may, under certain conditions, reduce the compensation by 50%.

What else does Eurowings owe you besides compensation?

If your flight is cancelled or you are denied boarding, the airline must offer you a choice between re-routing to your final destination and a refund of the ticket price. The choice is yours - Eurowings cannot force an alternative flight on you instead of a refund. If your flight is delayed by 5 hours or more, you have the right to give up the trip and ask for a refund of the ticket price.

When can you ask Eurowings for a refund of your ticket?

  • your flight was cancelled and you chose a refund instead of re-routing;
  • your flight was delayed by 5 hours or more and you decided not to travel;
  • you were denied boarding and chose a refund instead of re-routing.

The refund covers the price of the unused parts of the ticket and is due within 7 days. It is paid in cash or by bank transfer, and a voucher or credit for a future flight can only be given with your written agreement.

A ticket refund is not compensation. These are two separate rights, and getting one does not cancel the other. If your flight is cancelled or you are denied boarding, you do not lose your right to compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 just because you accepted a refund of your ticket or re-routing.

What other expenses can you claim from Eurowings?

  • the cost of meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation and transport if you waited for the delayed or replacement flight and Eurowings did not provide them;
  • the costs you incurred to reach your final destination if you were not offered a choice between re-routing and a refund and had to arrange the journey yourself.

Did the airline refuse to pay you?

The airline’s refusal does not necessarily mean that you are not entitled to compensation. The reason given in the refusal is not always sufficient to release the airline from liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed a connecting flight with Eurowings. Am I entitled to compensation?

Yes, if both flights are on a single booking and you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late, unless Eurowings proves extraordinary circumstances. Compensation is based on the distance from your departure airport to your final destination.

If the flights were bought separately, you can only claim compensation for the delayed flight if it reached its own destination 3 hours or more late.

My ticket is from Eurowings, but the flight was operated by another airline. Who owes the compensation?

As a rule, the airline that actually operates the flight and bears operational responsibility for it - it is shown in your booking ("operated by"). However, when a flight with a Eurowings flight number is operated with another airline's aircraft and crew under a wet lease agreement, liability, as a rule, remains with Eurowings. Discover Airlines (formerly Eurowings Discover) is a separate airline - compensation for its flights is owed by Discover Airlines.

I was offered another Eurowings flight at the airport and accepted it. Do I lose my compensation?

Not necessarily. Accepting re-routing does not mean giving up compensation - these are two separate rights. If your flight is cancelled and you find out at the airport, re-routing alone does not take away your right to compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. However, the airline does not owe compensation if it offers you re-routing within the limits set by the Regulation - if you are told less than 7 days before the flight, departing no more than 1 hour earlier and arriving less than 2 hours later; if you are told between 7 and 14 days before, departing no more than 2 hours earlier and arriving less than 4 hours later.

If you are denied boarding, you can claim compensation even if you are re-routed, and under certain conditions the airline may reduce it by 50%.

Eurowings offered me a voucher instead of a refund. Do I have to accept it?

No. A refund of the ticket price is due in cash or by bank transfer, and a voucher can only be given with your written agreement. The same applies to compensation.

If you accept a voucher for the value of your ticket, you do not lose your right to compensation when the legal conditions are met - a refund and compensation are two separate rights.

Eurowings cancelled my flight because of a pilot or cabin crew strike. Am I entitled to compensation?

As a rule, yes. A strike by the airline's own staff over the employees' demands on the airline is not an extraordinary circumstance. If you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days before the flight, you can claim compensation of €250 to €600, unless you were offered re-routing that meets the conditions of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

Strikes by staff outside the airline - for example, airport security or air traffic control - may be an extraordinary circumstance.

What is the time limit for claiming compensation from Eurowings?

There is no single time limit for the whole EU - it depends on the national law that applies to your claim. For example, in Bulgaria it is 3 years, and in Germany it is also 3 years, but it starts running from the end of the year in which the flight took place.
