Denied boarding

When am I entitled to a monetary compensation?

If you checked in and arrived for boarding on time and yet the airline representative refused to get you on board you are entitled to a monetary compensation.

IMPORTANT! Please make sure you keep your boarding pass and ask the airline for a document confirming that you were “involuntary denied boarding”.

When the compensation is not due?

If you “volunteer” not to travel on your flight you are not entitled to a monetary compensation. Some airlines offer compensation in the form of vouchers, flight points or cash to passengers willing to voluntarily give up their seat and travel with another flight. In this case you are voluntary denied boarding and no compensation is due.

In case if you denied boarding because of expired passport or without valid visa (when needed) a passenger is not entitled to a monetary compensation.

What are my other rights when I am denied boarding?

If you were denied boarding you have the right to choose between re-routing and reimbursement of the ticket price.
In case if you choose re-routing you have the right to:

  • food and beverages relevant to the waiting time
  • phone call, telex, fax message or email
  • free hotel accommodation and transfer between the airport and hotel if the expected departure time is on the next day
