When can you claim compensation for a flight from/to Sofia Airport?

In case of a delay of 3 hours or more on arrival, cancellation, denied boarding or a missed connection on a flight from or to Sofia Airport, you can claim compensation of €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. For flights departing from Sofia, Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies regardless of which airline you fly with. For flights to Sofia from a non-EU country, the applicable rules depend on the route and on the airline operating the flight.

When does the airline not owe compensation?

The airline does not owe compensation for a delay, cancellation or missed connection if it proves that the problem with the specific flight was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken - for example, dangerous weather conditions or an air traffic controllers' strike.

What care are you entitled to while waiting at Sofia Airport?

Even in extraordinary circumstances, the airline must provide you with care. In case of cancellation or denied boarding, as well as a departure delay of 2, 3 or 4 hours depending on the flight distance, the airline must provide you with:

  • meals and refreshments;
  • two free phone calls or emails;
  • hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the hotel - if an overnight stay is necessary.

If you do not receive care, keep your receipts - you can claim reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

How much compensation can you get for a flight from/to Sofia?

The amount of compensation under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 depends on the flight distance, not on the ticket price. You can claim €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, and the table shows example destinations from Sofia.

Distance Compensation Example destinations
up to 1,500 km €250 Milan, Naples, Rhodes, Athens, Istanbul
over 1,500 to 3,500 km €400 Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, London, Hurghada
over 3,500 km, not entirely within the EU €600 Beijing, Delhi, Bangkok (with a connection on one booking)

Do you have connecting flights?

For connecting flights on one booking, compensation is calculated based on the distance between the first departure airport and the final destination, not the individual flight. This is why in some cases you can claim a higher amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you claim compensation for a flight from Sofia with a non-EU airline?

Yes. Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies to all flights departing from an EU airport, regardless of the airline. If your flight from Sofia Airport with Turkish Airlines or another non-EU airline arrived 3 or more hours late or was cancelled, you can claim compensation on the same terms as with a European airline.

Are you entitled to compensation for a flight from Istanbul to Sofia with Turkish Airlines?

Not under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, because the flight departs from outside the EU with a non-EU airline. However, flights from Türkiye are covered by the Turkish SHY-YOLCU regulation (SHY-PASSENGER), which also provides for compensation for cancelled flights, denied boarding and long delays.

What are your rights if your flight from London to Sofia is delayed?

A flight from London to Sofia is covered by UK261 regardless of the airline - if you arrive 3 or more hours late, you can claim £350. If the flight is operated by an EU airline, Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 may also apply, under which compensation is €400. You cannot receive double compensation for the same disruption.

Can you claim compensation if you miss a connecting flight after departing from Sofia?

Yes, if all flights are on one booking. In that case, Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies to the whole journey, even if the connection is outside the EU, for example in Istanbul or Doha. If you arrive at your final destination 3 or more hours late, compensation is calculated based on the distance from Sofia to the final destination.
